In this classic and haunting tale directed by Percy Adlon (Bagdad Café), two women meet and develop an unusual and unexpected relationship. k.d. lang portrays Kotz, an androgynous young Eskimo. She is attracted to Roswitha (Rosel Zech, Aimée and Jaguar, Lola), a German expatriate and the town librarian. Although Roswitha initially rebuffs the younger woman, Kotz's innocent persistence gradually wins her over. Together, they find the freedom to face old demons and to express their hidden yearnings.

Beautifully shot on location in Alaska and Germany, the film also features Grammy® award-winner k. d. lang singing the evocative song Barefoot throughout. The music video version of Barefoot appears on both the 10th Anniversary VHS and the new DVD editions. The DVD also includes an intimate interview with k. d. lang in her home. Speaking candidly to her old friend and Salmonberries director Percy Adlon, lang reminisces about the making of the film and her impressions of the vast Alaskan wilderness.
